Hydras, Jr
Hello, my name is Coach Edward and I am Scarlett's Dad. I will be serving as your child's Head Coach this season. This will be my sixth season as Head Coach. Additionally, I have coached adult "children" for several years in the adult league, so I am experienced in working with different personality types. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me by phone or text at 919-495-3611.
What to Expect
To help us stay organized and communicate effectively, we use an app called Spond. Please register by clicking the link provided, and if prompted for a group code, use "BFVPI." You may see reminders throughout the page about the importance of downloading this app for you and your child. Click Here
Although we will make every effort to coordinate our activities in advance, there may be unforeseen circumstances that require last-minute changes or Spond messages. Please understand that we are all human and mistakes can happen. We will do our best to communicate any changes with you and appreciate your patience in these situations.
Schedule/Communication
I will add the practice and game schedule to the app once Polar loads it. Our practices will always be on Saturdays at Wake Forest, while the games are subject to change but will usually be held on Sundays. Please make sure to double-check the location of each event on Spond to avoid going to the wrong rink.
Open communication is essential, It is crucial that you click the attend or decline button for practices, games, and any other events posted. This will help us ensure that we have a full bench and a goalie for each game.
If you send me a message in Spond and I do not respond, please feel free to call or text me at 919-495-3611 (preferably text).
Jersey Numbers/ Positions
Please send me a message with your child's jersey number, and kindly double-check the preferred position(s) listed below to ensure their accuracy. If any position is listed as "unknown," please let me know by sending a message in Spond
Gameday Information
For the first game, please plan to arrive one hour before the start time. This will give everyone a chance to get to know each other in the locker room, go over pregame stretches, and ensure that all equipment, such as skates and helmets, are properly adjusted. For the rest of the season, please try to have your children at the rink at least 45 minutes before game time.
Volunteer Positions
For our practices, my ideal scenario is to have three to four coaches on the ice. This allows us to work together in a specific zone while still keeping the drill moving for the rest of the group. It also gives me the opportunity to focus on a child who may need some additional help with the fundamentals.
Having three/four coaches also means that if one of us cannot make it to a practice, our team still has two coaches on the ice. This ensures that we maintain our team's coaching team on the ice for the benefit of all players.
Carpool
Practices are, in my opinion, more important than games. If you are willing to give another child a ride to either a game or a practice please fill out the form below.
Drinks and Snacks -
Last season, instead of assigning tasks, we relied on our “Team Mom” to coordinate with volunteers to handle certain responsibilities. This approach worked well since everyone has their own commitments outside of hockey (except for me, of course!) and some games may be missed.
By having volunteers, we can ensure that tasks are still taken care of even if someone cannot make it to a game or event. This system allows for greater flexibility and helps ensure that our team runs smoothly
Pictures and Videos
To capture your children's progress on the ice throughout the season, I'd like to have pictures and videos taken. I'm looking for one or two volunteers who can help facilitate this.
The pictures and videos will be posted on our team's page, making it easy for you to share them with family and friends. This will also be a great way to track your child's development over the season and to identify areas where we can focus on improvement.
Additionally, I will be posting footage from our games captured by Livebarn and any pictures or videos taken using my camera(s).
“Off-Ice”
I plan to hold an off-ice session after the first practice, weather permitting, or before the first game, especially for those transitioning from 8u. One of the biggest challenges for new players is understanding the concept of offsides. The second biggest hurdle is icing. The sooner they grasp these, the better it will be for our team. To help with this, I have included a video below in which Snoop Dogg explains the rules of offsides. I believe it will be a valuable resource to share with your child. We will try to run a few more of these throughout the season
Ironclad Jr - Parents vs. Kids game
I am the co-founder of MCHL, a small company that organizes hockey events, and I work with my partner Jim. This past season we debuted the Ironclad Jr. event was a big success and a lot of fun for everyone involved! I'm sure the parents and kids are looking forward to the next one. Hosting it every season is a great way to build community and make lasting memories for the team. These events can really help build team spirit and create a sense of camaraderie among the players and their families. I'm sure it will be a highlight of the season! You can see what it is all about by clicking Here!
End-of-Season Party
We will get decide what to do when we get closer to the end of the season. Typically we eitther run an Ironclad Jr, or just rent the ice for an hour and have some fun.
Just in case Bag!
I want to gather any extra equipment and jerseys anyone is willing to part with. I want a full set of everything to keep in my vehivle if someone forgets something.

Is this your child’s first season in 10u?
The two biggest hurdles for players transitioning from 8u to 10u are offsides and playing on the big ice. The big ice can be intimidating at first but as we get through the first few practices your kids will get their legs in no time. As far as offsides, I would like to have an “off ice” session after our first practice(weather permitting). Please have your child watch this video by snoop dog explaining offsides.
