The Winning Combination: Forechecking, Backchecking, and Hard Work in Beer League Hockey

In beer league hockey, forechecking and backchecking are often overlooked, but they can make all the difference in a team's success. By putting pressure on the opposing team's defensemen and supporting the defense when the opposing team gains possession, a team can control the play and create scoring opportunities. MCHL's Getting Started on the Ice: Advice for Adults Taking the Puck Drop

If you're an adult in the Raleigh, NC area who's considering playing hockey for the first time, MCHL is here to help. As a community-based organization, MCHL has a program called Mythical Creatures Members (MCM) that's designed to help new players get started with coached practices, discounts on pick-ups, and a supportive community.

Here are some do's and don'ts for adults joining hockey for the first time:

Do: Start with a Learn-to-Play Program. MCHL's Learn-to-Play program is specifically designed for adults who are new to the sport and will teach you the fundamentals of skating, stickhandling, and shooting. Most programs will also provide you with the necessary equipment, so you don't have to invest in gear before you know if you'll enjoy the sport.

Don't: Be Afraid to Ask for Help. Most if not all of MCHL's members are here to help. If you're struggling with a particular skill, don't hesitate to ask a more experienced player or your coach for advice. They'll be happy to help you improve.

Do: Practice as Much as Possible. Like any sport, the more you practice, the better you'll become. MCHL offers more ice time than any other organization in the Raleigh, NC area, so take advantage of it! Try to make time for additional ice time beyond your scheduled practices, whether it's attending pick-up games or finding some friends to skate with.

Don't: Get Discouraged by Mistakes. As a beginner, you'll make mistakes. It's a natural part of the learning process. Don't get discouraged if you fall or miss a shot. Keep working on your skills, and you'll get better over time. Remember, even professional hockey players make mistakes!

Do: Join a League or Team. Once you've gotten the hang of the basics, consider joining a league or team. This will give you the opportunity to play in organized games and tournaments and to meet other players who share your passion for the sport. MCHL offers a variety of options, so you're sure to find a fit that works for you.
